Nordcon – now building Indigenous futures

Our newest Employment Pathways Partner, Wodonga-based residential developer Nordcon, is now offering work experience and traineeship opportunities for young Indigenous men and women in its offices and on sites around the Border region.

The company has been buying land, designing, and constructing housing estates for local people for a decade and employs a wide range of staff including construction workers, environmental and civil engineers, salespeople, landscapers, and environmental scientists.

With several thousand Lots yet to be developed, Nordcon has significant employment opportunities.

Through the partnership with On-Country Pathways, Nordcon hopes to attract Indigenous students from local high schools to complete one-to-two-week work experience placements to experience the many different aspects of the business. There are also 12-month traineeships on offer including landscaping and a Certificate III in Civil Construction delivered onsite.

Nordcon Engineering Manager, Steve Martin, said: “We have done a fair bit of work around youth employment, but not specifically Indigenous youth and we are very keen to get involved.”

“Having a partner like On-Country Pathways offers us a lot of value, especially around the mentoring of participants. I think any young person has a lot to grapple with when starting work. Having someone who understands and can guide them through will help them to get the best start.”

Darren Moffitt, On-Country Pathways Program Manager, said the addition of Nordcon as an Employment Pathways Partner was a huge deal. “This well-established, well regarded residential construction company is ready to invest in the careers of our young Indigenous people which is fantastic news for our Border communities.”

On-Country Pathways offers four unique programs to help Indigenous 15–24-year-olds find employment and career pathways into construction and related trades in the Riverina area. Employment Pathways Partners undergo cultural safety training to ensure our participants have the best experience during their placements. All young people on our programs are eligible for mentoring during, and if required, after their placements.
